June Hwajung, born in 1991 in South Korea, is a Vienna-based visual artist whose practice is shaped by his experience as an Asian, non-native speaker and queer artist navigating European cultural contexts. Working across painting, installation, and performance, he explores intimacy, desire, and bodily instability, focusing on how emotions and relationships unfold within private and transitional spaces.
In his earlier paintings, June depicted transparent, intertwined figures with ambiguous boundaries, reflecting the uncertainty and fluidity of human relationships. Set in spaces such as beds, protest sites, and dark rooms, these works capture moments where desire, vulnerability, and emotional intensity collide. Through these scenes, he questions the stability of social ideals and personal identities, drawing attention to the fragile line between connection and alienation.
More recently, June’s work has shifted away from the direct depiction of the body toward what remains in its absence. everyday objects, domestic spaces, and fragile materials marked by use, exhaustion, and adaptation. Rather than representing queerness as a visible identity, his practice approaches it through misaligned temporality, compromised functionality, and states of ongoing adjustment. By tracing how norms, traditions, and power structures are internalized within intimate environments, June’s work reveals the quiet tensions that shape contemporary post-migrant life.
